New Forms Festival respectfully acknowledges its location on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories.
New Forms Festival is an audio-visual festival operating since the year 2000, dedicated to creating interactive events that showcase independent and groundbreaking artists and musicians from across the world, alongside local and emerging talent. The 2019 edition will bring this ethos of curation to life in the historic neighbourhood of Railtown, where the Japanese Language School & Hall and the neighbouring Pace project and event space will be hosting the festival’s core events. Additional music showcases and daytime programs will be held at venues adjacent to the Main Street corridor, including The Fox, Red Gate, Deep Blue, Open Studios, and James Black Gallery.
Curation for this year’s festival comes from a new directorial team, with each of its members bringing their own experience as musicians/DJs, cultural workers, and curators from their own respective scenes scattered across the North American cultural landscape. This team consists of VIA Festival co-founder and Hot Mass resident Lauren Goshinski from Pittsburgh, PA; Phoenix to Vancouver transplant and Ascetic House collective director JS Aurelius; and TUF co-founder and Discwoman affiliate Ceci Corsano-Leopizzi based in Seattle, WA.
NFF19 continues its commitment to working with Vancouver-based organizations and artist collectives that are pushing the envelope in their own ways. The festival will be presenting events, workshops, and installations in tandem with initiatives and organizations such as Current Symposium, James Black Gallery, NuZi, Public Disco, Sacred Sound Club, s.M.i.L.e. and Quiet City, among others. New Forms and their partners co-organize events that highlight mutually inspirational artists and shared cultural mandates, allowing everyone to achieve greater goals together.
