"INDEX, AVENUE, SKYLIGHT"
SITE SPECIFIC INSTALLATION

INDEX, AVENUE and SKYLIGHT are three monumental animations referencing underground venues in Vancouver BC; the name of each animation borrowing from the name of one of the venues. Each animation uses idiomatic visual elements from Nicolas Sassoon’s practice to evoke the culture and communities surrounding these venues: pixelated pixels, digital moirés and isometric perspective are used to render a multitude of details, objects, textures and fictional elements. INDEX, AVENUE and SKYLIGHT considers the representation of undocumented spaces hosting cultural events on the fringe of legality. The animations are subjective records: they are "drawn" from memory featuring a combination of accurate and imaginary elements. Through a process of recollection and imagination, INDEX, AVENUE and SKYLIGHT manifest chaotic environments looking dated, idealized and ethereal. For this specific iteration, INDEX, AVENUE and SKYLIGHT will be exhibited as a site-specific installation, featuring the animations at a life-size scale through numerous projections.

NICOLAS SASSOON is a Vancouver-based artist who uses early computer imaging techniques to render a wide array of forms and figures, encoded visually using pixelated patterns and animation. His focus on computer graphics is driven by the sculptural, material and pictorial qualities of this imagery, as well as its limitations and its poetics. While most of his output is published online, Sassoon also materializes his web-based practice into a wide range of medias. His visual research often leads him to engage in cross-disciplinary projects in the fields of architecture, electronic music, textiles, and art. Sassoon is a founder of the collective W-A-L-L-P-A-P-E-R-S and SIGNALS. His work has been exhibited at The Whitney Museum of American Art (US) Eyebeam (US), Current Museum (US), Hammer Museum (US), Vancouver Art Gallery (CA), Plugin ICA (CA), Contemporary Art Gallery (CA), Charles H.Scott Gallery (CA), Western Front (CA), PRETEEN Gallery (MX), Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), the Centre d’Art Bastille (FR), Espace Multimedia Gatner (FR), House of Electronic Art Basel (SW), Arti et Amicitiae (NL), MU Eindhoven (NL) , Today Art Museum (CN), the Berlin Fashion Week (DE)) and the New-York Fashion Week (US).

FALSE WITNESS
(NY/LA, ON THE SLY)

False Witness is an audio visual identity designed by sound artist and producer, Marco Gomez. The False Witness project explores electronic music through a provocative queer lens, revolving around themes that speak to the urban experience, states of trauma or heightened states of consciousness. False Witness has been a resident DJ of New York City’s iconic GHE20G0TH1K club night since 2014, where he developed his signature aggressive sound that defies traditional genre conventions. His debut with GHE20G0TH1K Records came in the Spring of 2017 with his EP, The Art Of Fighting; a four track record that positions itself as the caustic intersection of Techno, ‘Bubblin’, Rave and queer identity. False Witness has performed and debuted work internationally at such institutions as the Venice Biennale, the Frieze Art Fair in London, and MoMA PS1. He is one of the original founding members of the American artist collective, #KUNQ, and is a current MFA candidate at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.
