x/o is Veron Xio, a producer, performer, visual artist and DJ based in Vancouver, Canada. Interested in disrupting binaries and transgressing codes of identity, x/o uses loose narratives, contrasting sonics and butterfly evolution allegories to create cathartic soundtracks that are both ethereal and aggressive.
In 2017, x/o’s conceptual soundtrack Cocoon Egg was released on Quantum Natives. With themes of healing and transcendence over adversity, the album was described by The Wire Magazine as having "…a complex, compelling affect hardly heard in digital music." Since then, x/o has released singles and remixes with forward thinking labels such as PTP, Eternal Dragonz, and Objects Limited and is preparing for the sequel soundtrack to Cocoon Egg.
x/o has presented work internationally across Asia, Europe, and North America and most recently performed live audiovisual sets at MUTEK Montreal, Somerset House Studios, and HeK Basel.
With an interdisciplinary approach, x/o has also collaborated with several visual artists, exploring new areas of sonic experimentation. This includes a commission for Australian artist Jonathan Zawada on Metamathemagical, a digital artwork involving a full scale projection onto the Sydney Opera House, as part of the 2018’s Vivid Sydney.
Additionally in 2019, x/o was one of eleven artists selected to participate in the AMPLIFY residency at the prestigious Somerset House Studios in London, UK.
In Vancouver, x/o is a founding member, co-curator, and resident DJ of s.M.i.L.e., a collective that organizes new music events and a monthly radio show on n10.as.
