NuZi is a rap and electronic music collective founded by betty mulat and samira warsame. The movement started in the fall of 2017 when the two DJs grew tired of how the lack of diversity in the Vancouver music scene was negatively impacting their community. After their first successful DIY show featuring Suzi Analogue and the local Softieshan; Mulat and Warsame loved the idea of having all black lineups featuring incredibly talented and well established international artists with local upcoming DJs and Performers. This initiative helped encourage togetherness by uplifting black voices and bridging the gap between the black community and the electronic music community.
They created NuZi aiming to provide a platform for black women, woc and trans folks within the Vancouver electronic music scene. NuZi focuses on highlighting blackness and empowering marginalized folks by promoting the production of dance and music events. They strive to strengthen and preserve black culture through community engagement, dance, encouragement, safety and having all those who are faced with our oppressive society seen and heard.
