Public Disco was founded to bring new life to underutilized public space thanks to an initial investment from the City of Vancouver's VIVA Refresh program in 2017. Now in its third year, the organization partners with entities such as brands, business associations and festivals to produce events in a range of unconventional urban spaces from plazas and laneways to converted industrial buildings. Public Disco’s latest project is a 5 part summer Laneway Series that fuses dance performances with live music acts, dj sets and laneway transformations.
Public Disco events are part of a new wave of activities that are reshaping views regarding what public space is and what’s possible within it. Public Disco aims to honour a colourful history by creating a space that celebrates queer identity, encourages vibrant self-expression and showcases a diverse array of artists through accessible public programming. While the format of the events is different from the discotheques of yesterday, its core elements of love, happiness, expression and acceptance shine bright in everything Public Disco does.
